Am I too old or too young?

If you are in good health, you can enjoy any of the tours on these pages. We offer a wide variety of excursions aiming to accommodate as many different itineraries, objectives and holiday styles as possible. However, you must keep in mind that we are at an average altitude that ranges between 4800 and 2000 m.a.s.l. which usually causes altitude sickness, so it is important to see the adaptation of your body to the environment.

What is altitude sickness and how can it affect me on my trip?

Lack of oxygen at high altitudes (above 2500 m) affects most people to some extent. The symptoms can be mild or severe and occur because air pressure is reduced, for this reason the lungs and heart must work harder to oxygenate the body. A mild degree of altitude sickness does not interfere with activity, but persistent and worsening symptoms can lead to two very serious situations, pulmonary edema and cerebral edema, which can be fatal. For this reason, good acclimatization, a good physical disposition and previous experience can help in most cases to achieve good performance, but do not trust yourself. The symptoms of altitude sickness are: headache, dizziness and nausea, loss of appetite, disturbed sleep and difficulty breathing. The best medicine is prevention and there are some things you can do to minimize the risks and improve your performance:

• «Climb high, sleep low» is the best method to prevent altitude sickness.

• Stay well hydrated (drink at least 4 to 6 liters of water a day). Urine should be abundant and clear to pale yellow in color.

• Maintain a high-calorie diet while at altitude.

• Take it easy and don’t strain yourself when you reach the height.

• A slow and constant pace will make it easier for you to work at height.

• Avoid tobacco and alcoholic beverages.

• If symptoms worsen it is better to stop the activity and go down.
